India hasn’t seen much recognition in tennis, but Sania Mirza is a prominent figure in the country’s women’s tennis player. Sania Mirza, who made her debut in 2001, brought glory to India’s tennis scene and took it to an international level. Since her retirement, fans have been waiting for a successor to fill her shoes. The 15-year-old sensation Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi, who is still a schoolgirl, announced herself as the future of Indian tennis. Currently, taking part in the WTA Mumbai Open 125, Rajeshwaran has reached to the semifinals of the tournament. She’s nearing creating history in Indian tennis after 2 decades to become the second player to win the WTA singles title. Earlier, it was Sania Mirza who won the Hyderabad Open in 2005 to become the first-ever Indian woman to win a WTA singles title. It’s Rajeshwaran’s chance to bring back the glory after 20 years. She will be playing her semifinal match against fifth-seeded Jil Teichmann on Saturday.
Who is Maaya Rajeshwaran and why is she special?
Maaya was born on June 12, 2009, in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. She started playing tennis as an after-school activity at age eight. She first trained with India’s former No. 1 K.G. Ramesh, and for the past five years, she has been at Pro Serve Tennis Academy with coach Manoj Kumar. Despite being new to senior tournaments, her talent is impressive. A week at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, Spain boosted her skills, leading to a yearlong contract there. She plans to move to Spain to improve further. Maaya even watched Nadal train before the Davis Cup Finals, which was his final career tournament.
Maaya Rajeshwaran in Mumbai Open 125
Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi showed an impressive performance in the Mumbai Open. In the qualifying rounds, she defeated Italy’s N. Fossa Huergo with scores of 6-3, 3-6, 6-0, and advanced by overcoming the USA’s Jessica Failla at 7-6(9), 6-4. In the Round of 32, she beat Belarus’s Shymanovich 6-4, 6-1. Her journey continued with a win against Kazakhstan’s Zarina Diyas (6-3, 3-2). In the quarterfinals, she defeated Japan’s Mei Yamaguchi.

Just like Maaya, Sania Mirza too started her career in her teenage years, but she was just 19 years old when she won the WTA Singles title. However, it’s too early to say anything, but Rajeshwaran still promises to achieve bigger heights in Indian tennis in the years to come.
