BWF World Championship Highlights: Prannoy, Lakshya Sen enters third round

Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy advanced to the third round. However PV Sindhu crashed out from the tournament after losing against Nozomi Okuhara.

Badminton World Championship Highlights: – World No.9 HS Prannoy and Lakshya Sen entered the third round in the BWF World Championships 2023. Prannoy defeated Chico Dwi Wardoyo 21-9, 21-14. Lakshya Sen hardly broke a sweat as he defeated South Korea’s Jeon Hyeok Jin 21-11, 21-12. Meanwhile five-time medallist PV Sindhu lost to Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara 14-21, 14-21 to bow out of the tournament.

Lakshya Sen vs Jeon Hyeok Jin

India’s Lakshya Sen, bronze medallist at the 2021 edition, prevailed 21-11 21-12 over the world number 51 Korean.

Lakshya Sen dominated the proceedings throughout. The Indian lead 5-1 and slowly kept extending the gap against a struggling Jeon. He entered the interval with 11-6 lead and kept things under a firm grip even after resumption to quickly move to 18-11 before sealing the first game with three straight points.

In the second game, Lakshya Sen opened up a 4-1 lead and extended it to 10-5. Another straight jump smash helped the Indian make it 11-5 at the break. Sen continued to construct his points and got behind the shuttle early to produce clean winners to grab eight match points and converted it in his second attempt.

PV Sindhu vs Nozomi Okuhara

The most successful Indian at World Championships with five medals, PV Sindhulost to Nozomi Okuhara in the second round. It is the first time in her career that Sindhu has failed to reach the quarterfinals at the prestigious tournament.

The duo has been troubled by injuries in the last 12 months and had missed the last edition. Sindhu came into the match with a 10-8 cushion but her game lacked the attacking prowess as she succumbed to a loss eventually.

Women’s doubles pair Ashwini Bhat and Shikha Gautam and mixed doubles pair Venkat Prasad and Juhi Dewangan also bowed out of the tournament. against German duo Jones Ralfy Jansen/Linda Efler.

Ashwini Bhat and Shikha Gautam pushed Dutch pair Debora Jille and Cheryl Seinen to the third game after an opening game loss, but succumb to a defeat by 14-21, 21-11, 14-21.
