Aggresive play worked for Satwik-Chirag as they “Smash” into semifinals of India Open 2025

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty storm into India Open 2025 semifinals with a dominant straight-game win over South Korea's Jin-Kang. Thanks to their aggressive approach

Indian badminton duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty delivered an impressive performance to go into the semifinals of the India Open 2025, marking their back-to-back semifinal appearance in the BWF World Tour. The match against South Korea’s Jin-Kang showed the Indian pair’s dominance as they clinched a straight-game victory with scores of 21-9, 21-17.

“We were mentally ready for a third game, but we wanted to finish it in two, and we managed that.” said Chirag after the match. The duo played aggressively putting relentless smashed to dominate in the match.

Aggressive start from the duo

The match kicked off with Satwik and Chirag setting an aggressive tone right from the start. They quickly gained a lead, making it clear that they were in control. With precise down-the-line smashes and powerful cross-court shots, they secured an early 7-1 advantage in the first game. The Indian duo maintained their momentum, taking a commanding mid-game lead at 11-3, thanks to Satwik’s effective smashes.

Despite some efforts from the Korean pair, Satwik and Chirag cruised through the first game, winning it 21-9. Their relentless attack and consistent play put them in a strong position as they entered the second game.

“Yeah, right from the start, we were all guns blazing. That’s what we wanted to do — keep the pressure on them. If we slow down, they can capitalise and maneuver us. So, we never let them back into the game and are happy we stuck to our plan and finished strong.” said Chirag

The second game went well for the duo

In the second game, the Indian pair continued their aggressive approach, quickly extending their lead to 9-4. Satwik’s powerful smashes and Chirag’s sharp net play kept the pressure on the Korean duo. However, Jin-Kang made a brief comeback, leveling the scores at 16-16 with some tactical play. Nevertheless, Chirag’s crucial interception at the net helped regain the lead for India, putting them ahead at 19-17.

“Our coach reminded us to mix up the directions and get back to our aggressive play. It’s about having multiple options, and I gained a lot of confidence from that. We’ve been working on this strategy.” said Chirag.

With only moments left in the match, the Indian pair maintained their composure, closing out the second game 21-17. Their victory was marked by strategic shot placements and efficient teamwork, ensuring a comfortable win that showcased their skill and synergy.
