Uttarakhand is buzzing with excitement as it prepares to host the 38th edition of the National Games, a major multi-sport event that will take place from January 28 to February 14. Organised by the Indian Olympic Association, this event will bring together athletes from all over India, competing for medals. As Uttarakhand celebrates its Silver Jubilee, the Games will not only focus on sports but also highlight the state’s cultural richness and natural beauty.
History of National Games
The National Games have a rich history that began in 1924, when they were first held in Lahore, undivided India, under the name Indian Olympic Games. Over the years, the Games have become an integral part of India’s sports landscape, providing athletes an opportunity to show their talents on a big platform.

The diverse terrain of Uttarakhand makes it an excellent location for the National Games. Events will be held across various districts, including Dehradun, Haridwar, and Nainital. Dehradun will host indoor sports like volleyball and badminton, while adventure sports such as archery are expected to take place in Nainital.

Number of events and players
This year’s National Games will see the participation of around 9,720 athletes from 36 states, including 4,941 male and 4,779 female players. Competitions will span 45 events across 35 sports disciplines such as athletics, archery, rugby, and weightlifting, among others. In addition, demonstration sports like Mallakhamb and Yogasana will be shown as well.
