Australian Open Finals LIVE: Rafael Nadal’s BIG REVEAL, ‘was ready to retire two months back’, now he can be the man with ‘MOST GRAND SLAM TITLES’

Nadal vs Medvedev LIVE – Most Grand Slam Titles: Yes you read it right, Nadal was about to retire from the sport. Just 2 months back, he was not even sure whether he will be able to step on tennis court again.

  • He is coming out of a career threatening foot injury which saw him miss the second half of last season,
  • He had a bout of Covid in December.

Overcoming all these adversities and reaching the finals of Australian Open, Nadal was unusually emotional after making what will be his 29th Grand Slam final,

‘I went through a lot of challenging moments, a lot of days of hard work without seeing a light there,’ said the Spaniard.

‘I had a lot of conversations with the team, with the family about what is going to happen if things continue like this, thinking that maybe it is a chance to say goodbye. That was not a lot of months ago. To be able to be where I am now — I don’t know, I really can’t explain in words how important it is for me in terms of energy, in terms of personal satisfaction.

‘Just to compete and play tennis at the high level again, facing the most important players of the world, it’s something unbelievable. Being very honest, for me it is much more important to have the chance to play tennis than win the 21.’

KING of GRAND SLAMS? Will he win to become man with MOST GRAND SLAM TITLES?

Nadal vs Medvedev LIVE: On Sunday history will be calling NADAL on two counts. First he wil rewrite tennis history by becoming the player with MOST GRAND SLAM TITLES. Secondly he will be the the oldest to win a slam with only Ken Roswell & Roger Federer ahead of him.

Most Grand Slam Titles Record: Men’s Tennis in Singles

Player
Total
Australian Open
French Open
US Open
Wimbledon
Novak Djokovic 20 9 2 3 6
Roger Federer 20 6 1 5 8
Rafael Nadal 20 1 13 4 2
Pete Sampras 14 2 5 7

Oldest Grand Slam Champions: Nadal has already become the fifth man aged 35 or over to make a Slam final in the modern era.

He has joined the ranks of Ken Rosewall, Roger Federer, Mal Anderson and Andre Agassi. Now he can become the 3rd oldest to win a GRAND SLAM.

  • Ken Rosewall: Ken won Australian Open in 1972 at the age of 37 years, 2 months and 1 day old
  • Roger Federer: Federer was 36 years, 5 months and 7 days old when he claimed the 2018 Australian Open by beating Marin Cilic.
  • Rafael Nadal: Nadal is 35 now and will turn 36 on 3rd June making him 3rd oldest to win a GRAND SLAM.

Nadal vs Medvedev LIVE – Russian also on cusp of history: History will also be chasing 26-year-old Medvedev. The Russian will become the new world No 1 and the first man in the modern era to back up a first major success with victory in the next one he contests.

That was beyond even Nadal, Novak Djokovic or Roger Federer — albeit those three broke through at a younger age before amassing 60 between them.

Medvedev will be shooting for back-to-back major titles after upsetting Novak Djokovic in last year’s US Open final.

Like in New York last September, when he stopped Djokovic from completing a calendar Grand Slam of titles, Medvedev will be trying to derail Rafael Nadal’s tilt at making men’s tennis history.

“I’m going to play against one of the greatest and someone going for the 21st slam,” Medvedev said. “I’m ready, I know that Rafa is a very strong player and I need to show my best to try and win this match.”
