The All- India Selection Committee announced India’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2022 at the deadline on Monday. KL Rahul returns from injury and takes over vice-captaincy, while the tournament will also mark the return of Virat Kohli from his month-long vacation. Suryakumar Yadav, Dinesh Karthik, Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant retain their places from the T20I squad against the West Indies.
In what has been a tough competition for places, it is Deepak Hooda who has prevailed above the rest, making his way to the squad. The Lucknow Super Giants star was selected ahead of a plethora of IPL stars, including the costliest player Ishan Kishan, KKR captain Shreyas Iyer and Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson.
Kishan was nailed as a backup opener while Iyer and Samson have performed well sporadically for the Men in Blue, but it was Hooda who got the nod. After a stunning IPL, the 27-year-old turned it up on the international scene chipping in with valuable runs including a stunning century against Ireland.

Ishan Kishan’s exclusion was all the more shocking highlighting Rahul Dravid’s inconsistency in selection plans. Kishan was earmarked as a dynamic backup opener to Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, with both having a track record of injuries. The IPL 2022’s most expensive player has done well in the games he has featured for India, averaging above 30 with a strike rate of 131.15.
However, after a few bad outings from Kishan and the head coach and the selection committee have decided to drop the left-handed keeper. With Dinesh Karthik in the team, India have opted to go with the part-time option of Hooda than a specialist keeper. Kishan is amongst India’s leading run-getters in T20Is but the 23-year-old was handed only a solitary game on the West Indies tour.
Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer, both of whom were picked ahead of Kishan failed to make the most of their chances meaning it was Hooda who pipped them into the Asia Cup squad. While Iyer is still in India’s plans being named amongst the backups, Kishan and Samson were both omitted completely from the team. The duo will have a point to prove when they tour Zimbabwe before the Asia Cup for 3 ODIs.
