And there you have finally. Rohit Sharma has finally spoken up about the irritating retirement buzz, that every cricket fan had been talking about, for the last three days. After the Lord’s ODI, where the 39-year-old slammed 138 in 110 deliveries, said that his job was to only bat, and not respond to the noise outside.
Rohit Sharma says no to retirement
In a candid conversation with the team’s social media team, he said, “Look my job is with the bat, come and play, represent my country, represent the team. That’s what I’ve been told to do since I made my debut so that’s what I’m going to do. The noise, since I made my debut, was there. And till the time I’m going to stay here, it’s always going to be there. So it doesn’t really matter too much. What matters is what I do on the field. Try and contribute to the success of the team.
“That’s all my focus is right now. And let the noise be there. If there’s no noise, there’s no fun. My job is inside, their job is outside. That’s how I look at it.”
Slams maiden ton at Lord’s
For the unversed, during the 2nd ODI, a report from Indian Express claimed that Rohit would retire after the Lord’s match, after being forced by the selectors to do so. The fire was somewhat doused by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, who clarified that no such retirement would take place. But then, the cricketer’s clarification comes as a relief for the team, as well as the fans.
After all Rohit was struggling to get high scores this year. He had managed only 241 runs in 8 matches this year, with one fifty, and an average of 30. Now the tables have finally turned, as the 39-year-old has become the first Indian ODI centurion at the Lord’s.
