Ever since the news of Rohit Sharma‘s ‘forced retirement’ from international cricket, after the India vs England third ODI at Lord’s broke out, there have been a few reports suggesting — all is not well between him and coach Gautam Gambhir. But then, on the eve of the eventful match, the duo, perhaps purposely were seen sharing laughter at the iconic Lord’s balcony.
All is well between Rohit-Gambhir
As per a PTI report, it was on Rohit’s insistence during IPL 2024, that Gambhir joined Team India, but the relationship deteriorated during the New Zealand Test series later that year, and further worsened during the 2025 Australia tour. Just a few days back, the Indian Express reported, that Rohit was not pleased after being told — that he was not in the loop for selection… that perhaps could have strained the relationship again.
The publication quoted a BCCI official saying, “Selectors have informed Rohit he is not in their scheme of things post the England tour and they are moving on from him after this series. Though he wanted to continue, especially after working on his fitness. The selectors have left the ball in Sharma’s court to decide his future.” But the events that turned out in the Lord’s balcony, dismiss all those fears.
Dismiss rift rumours
But now, as of Saturday, that could be a thing of the past — as the BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has confirmed that Rohit won’t retire after the encounter. He clarified, “There are lot of speculations going on in media about Rohit’s future. I want to firmly assert that there has been no such discussion that Rohit will be playing his last match at Lord’s on Sunday,” Saikia told PTI.
“Rohit is a regular member of the Indian ODI team and he will continue to represent the country as long as he is in the scheme of things. In other words, Lord’s ODI wont be his last match.”
