Brendon McCullum apologized for England's poor state of affairs in Tests and for failing to win the series against India and Australia.

A day after being sacked as England cricket team‘s Test coach, Brendon McCullum has apologized for the miserable performance of the side in the longest format of the game. The former Kiwi cricketer heralded the Three Lions into the new ‘Bazball’ era after taking over as head coach in 2022. Despite showing promising signs at the start. ENG’s performance under McCullum witnessed a downward spiral since 2024, as the team managed lost 13 and won 12 Tests.

McCullum apologises for England’s failures

Speaking on SkySports, McCullum admitted that the team wasn’t able to win the big series against India (drawn 2-2) and the Ashes (loss 1-4), and apologized for the failures. The former Kiwi cricketer took the blame on himself, noting that he was the in-charge for the England team culturally and tactically and said that he wasn’t good enough.

We just weren’t quite able to win those big series, against India and Australia. For that I guess I can only say sorry. I was the leader of that group. I was in charge of the team culturally, in charge of the team tactically, in charge of the team results-wise as well. I’ve been around this game for 20-odd years and I know if you aren’t getting the results someone else needs an opportunity. I put my hand up for that and accept it wasn’t good enough,” McCullum said.

Brendon McCullum’s Test Coaching Record with England

McCullum’s tenure as England’s head coach started off with a bang, with the team winning 11 out of the first 13 Tests. But ever since the team failed to win the series against India, there was immense pressure on Baz. Things got more complicated when Australia handed them a thrashing in the Ashes. The final nail in the coffin came earlier this month when England lost to New Zealand at home, following which Ben Stokes announced his retirement.
