While the T20I series between England and India may be on, soon we will see the much-awaited one-day internationals. From July 14 onwards, England will host India for three ODIs, for which the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has revealed its squad. Announcing a 16-man squad, England have done multiple changes from their last team that played away against Sri Lanka. Harry Brook, who is dubbed as England’s next Test captain, is set to lead England in ODIs, while Jofra Archer has returned as well.
Meanwhile, Jacob Bethell is expected to open alongside Ben Duckett after the English failed to nail down any permanent opener to partner Duckett. Phil Salt isn’t with the team anymore, while Jamie Smith’s experiment also failed. In the last series, Zak Crawley was given just one chance.

Brook-led England select strong squad vs India
Harry Brook, who has committed his future to English cricket, will look to take England to an ODI win over India for the first time since 2018. England beat Virat Kohli’s India 2-1 in their own backyard. In that series, England came from being 0-1 behind, with Joe Root being the leading top-scorer with 216 runs.
Root is still going strong and is part of the batting group. With some exciting names like Jacob Bethell and Tom Banton around, Root will have a big role in store for him. England have moved from a batting-heavy squad to a bowling-heavy squad, adding three frontline quicks (Archer, Atkinson, and Tongue) plus Mahmood while sacrificing batting depth. Archer, who will be in action in the T20I series as well, will spearhead the pace attack that has debutant Josh Tongue as well. Tongue, despite playing 12 Tests, is yet to feature in an ODI for England. Archer last played the format back in October last year when England toured New Zealand and lost 3-0.
James Coles picked for first time
Of all the new names in England’s ODI squad, James Coles is the one turning heads. The 21-year-old Sussex all-rounder just got his first senior England call-up after a breakout season that’s put him firmly on the radar.
Coles first made waves in 2020 when he became Sussex’s youngest first-class debutant at just 16 years and 157 days. Since then he’s grown into one of the country’s most exciting all-round talents. He really announced himself earlier this month with an unbeaten 224 against Glamorgan, digging Sussex out of trouble.
The left-hander’s also been making a name for himself in franchise cricket, playing a massive part in Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s run to the SA20 final. His value shot up even more when London Spirit snapped him up for £390,000 in The Hundred draft — the highest price ever paid for an uncapped player in the tournament.
