Ever since Gautam Gambhir took over as the head coach of the Indian cricket team, it has been a tumultuous journey, to say the least. After taking over the reigns of the side in July 2024, it must be admitted, that we have lost a lot more from what we should have. Nonetheless, in his tenure, the team has also managed to win two ICC events – Champions Trophy 2025, and T20 World Cup 2026. So, it becomes important to look at his coaching record closely.

It wasn’t the most auspicious start to the Gambhir era, for Team India. They lost a bilateral ODI series against Sri Lanka after a gap of 27 years, which just shows side’s dominance over the years. That meant, India did not win a single ODI in 2024, which happened after a gap of 45 years. But to his credit, the team did win 8 consecutive matches in 2025, including the CT 2025. Most recently, we won the bilateral series vs Afghanistan 3-0.

Perhaps his worst has come in the Tests. India have been white-washed in home series’ twice in the last two years — against New Zealand and South Africa, that put a big question mark on his effectiveness, as the long format coach. It was after a gap of 36 year that India lost a Test to New Zealand at home. Then, it was after 19 years India lost a Test at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. 1st series at home was also lost at home.
India lost their first BGT after a massive gap of 10 years, showing their edge over the Aussie Test side. If that is not enough, India lost their first Test series at home against the Proteas in 25 years.

The only blot in Gautam Gambhir’s career as T20I coach has to be, the recent series lost to Ireland. Prior to that, the side had never lost a match to the Irish in any format, ever. Yes, there was a change in leadership, with Shreyas Iyer taking over from Suryakumar Yadav, but it should have been an easy series overall.
