Michael Vaughan advocated for a complete revamp of England's leadership group, including McCullum and Key, noting that enough is enough.

Former England cricket team captain Michael Vaughan has called for the axing of head coach Brendon McCullum and director Rob Key following the series loss against New Zealand. The ex-ENG cricketer’s remarks come after Ben Stokes announced his abrupt decision to retire from Tests after being embroiled in controversies for months. Vaughan advocated for a complete revamp of England’s leadership group, noting that enough is enough.

Time for Key and Baz to follow Stokes out?

Speaking to The Telegraph, Vaughan pointed out that England’s performances in the longest format of the game was getting worse with each passing series and said that a complete revamp was the need of the hour for the team. The former England cricketer minced no words and noted that while he does not want heads to roll, he can’t watch England cricket being wasteful anymore. Vaughan revealed that he had tried hard to not call for the sacking of Baz and Key after the Ashes humiliation and the failure to defeat India at home last year.

Enough is enough. With Ben Stokes walking off into the sunset and results getting worse and worse, now is the time for a complete clearout, with the coach Brendon McCullum and director of cricket Rob Key going too,” Vaughan said.

After taking over as the head coach in 2022, Brendon McCullum heralded England into the new ‘Bazball’ era that saw him work in close quarters with Ben Stokes. The team won 11 out of 13 Tests after Baz’s takeover, giving the team a new identity. However, things started going south a few years later for England. Since the start of 2024, England have lost 13 Tests and have won only 12. A 4-1 loss in the Ashes followed by a 2-2 draw against India at home haven’t helped Baz strengthen his case, although he has been given a long rope by the ECB.

There is so much skill and talent in the England changing room but it is not being harnessed at all. If all we have is to just keep going harder, and it’s been exposed again, on the back of chaos off the field, which has been happening too regularly, then it is time for change,” Vaughan added.
