Many Indian cricket fans might not enjoy this piece of news, but Joe Root has broken yet another Sachin Tendulkar Test record. He has joined the 14k Test-run club on the 4th day of the 2nd ENG vs NZ match, at the Oval on Saturday and is the fastest to the milestone. Root achieved the feat in 164 matches, while Tendulkar had managed 14,000 runs in 171 games.
Joe Root gets to 14k runs
Root for long is tipped to break Tendulkar’s record of most runs in Tests — that stands at a staggering 15,921 runs, and at this speed, should be able to surpass that in the next 2-3 years. In the last few years, especially since the start of the World Test Championships in 2019, he has been in sublime form.
| Batsman | Runs | Matches | Avg | 100s |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sachin Tendulkar | 15,921 | 200 | 53.78 | 51 |
| Joe Root | 14,000* | 164 | 50.73 | 41 |
IN the WTC, he has the most runs ever — 6577 in 76 matches, at an average of 51.78. That is at least 2k runs better than the next best batter — Steve Smith. The former Aussie skipper has 4564 runs in 59 matches, at an average of 50. That just shows the domination he has shown in the last 7 years.
In line to break Sachin Tendulkar’s record
What is even more impressive is, he has featured in 74 wins for England, where he has scored 7248 runs at an average of 62, where he has gotten 26 tons. In drawn matches, he has 2351 runs in 26 encounters, at an average of 61, with 8 tons to his name.
As far as the 2nd Test is concerned, England find themselves in a tough spot, chasing a massive 463. In the first innings the Kiwis went on to score 391, whereas the hosts were restricted to 291. There, Glenn Philipps had gone on to score his maiden Test ton. Post that, NZ batted excellently well again, and went on to score 362, with Henry Nicholls scoring 121.
