IND vs AFG, 3rd ODI: When hosts India come out to bat in the second innings, they would start the chase at 5/0.

Strange things happen in cricket, and the IND vs AFG 3rd ODI in Chennai, witnessed one. It was during the 40th over of the visitors’ innings, that they were penalised 5 runs from their already puny score. But then, no sympathies towards the skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi, who was the main culprit in the entire incident. The 31-year-old, who scored his maiden ton in the encounter, was warned multiple times by the umpires, for running in the danger area.

Hashmatullah Shahidi & Afghanistan penalised

Ever since he walked into the middle, coming into bat at no. 4, he involuntarily found himself running into the centre of the pitch, that would eventually help his side, in their turn of bowling. He was warned a couple of times, but the umpires had had enough. Finally, on the last delivery of the 40th over by Washington Sundar, the umpires swung into action. Not only was he reprimanded for his actions the very moment he was running the single, but India were awarded five runs.

Poor batting takes visitors to 218 all out

In fact, the run that Hashmat-Rashid Khan completed, was nullified in the next over. While even the commentators were confused, as to why Rashid Khan took strike against Harsh Dubey, in the next over… soon things were clarified. The incident ended there and then, but Afghanistan’s woes did not.

From 198/5 at one stage, they were bundled out for 218 in just the 45th over. In this time span, there were two run outs as well, that derailed Afghanistan’s innings even further. Meanwhile, apart from Hashmatullah Shahidi, only one other batter could score some runs — Azmatullah Omarzai scored 50 from 56.

Earlier in the day, AFG were reduced to only 36/4 in the 10h over; all due to Prasidh Krishna, who after the end of his first spell, had figures of 4/6. In the end, he managed to pick up one more wicket — that brought him his first fifer of his ODI career.
