England cricket team captain Ben Stokes might not just be forced to step down as captain following the night-club incident during Ashes 2025, but may also have to retire from international cricket following the incident. England captain Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson are being investigated by the ECB following an incident at a London nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning, shortly after England’s 115-run win over New Zealand at Lord’s. As per the report, a senior correspondent claimed that Stokes had been told that he should walk away instead of facing disciplinary action.
Stokes to retire?
As per talkSPORT, George Dobell told the publication that he fears Stokes in not only going to step down as England’s Test captain, but is also going to retire. Reports suggest the incident involved players from Saracens Rugby Club, who were celebrating the end of their season at the same venue. The disagreement is understood to have originated between Atkinson and an unnamed Saracens academy player.
“I fear from everything I hear that Stokes is going to act first. And, regretfully, I hear that he is going to step down and possibly even retire. I think that would be hugely regrettable and I hope he doesn’t. I hope he stands and fights his ground, which is the Ben Stokes we know,” he said.
Talking about Stokes, the all-rounder recently returned to action after recovering from a serious facial injury. His last Test appearance came back in January 2026 against Australia. The incident comes to the light right after England’s 115-run win at Lord’s in the ENG vs NZ 1st Test. The pitch for the game, which saw 35 wickets fall in two days, has been rated unsatisfactory by the ICC.
The controversy arrives at the worst possible time for England. Only months ago, the team introduced a strict midnight curfew after repeated criticism of players’ behaviour during the Ashes tour of Australia. That tour triggered debate about whether England had developed an unhealthy drinking culture.
