In what could be a massive rejig, Shreyas Iyer is all set to replace Suryakumar Yadav as the T20I captain. This comes ahead of the tour to Ireland and England, and after a sub-par performance by the latter in IPL 2026. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli has been ruled out of the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan, while Rohit Sharma is also unlikely to be a part of the series. Ruturaj Gaikwad is expected to replace Kohli in the ODI squad, while Rajat Patidar is reportedly set to replace Ruturaj in the India A squad for the tri-series. On that note, let’s take a look at the top headlines from Thursday.

New T20I captain for India
It has been confirmed that Suryakumar Yadav has been sacked as the T20I captain. This comes just after the conclusion of IPL 2026, where the batter recorded a poor performance. No Rohit Sharma-Virat Kohli for AFG ODIs
While Virat Kohli is confirmed to miss the ODI series against Afghanistan due to a hamstring injury, Rohit Sharma is also set to reportedly miss the series. Both stalwarts, who are active only in the 50-over format of the game, and have been India’s leading run-getters in ODIs since the Champions Trophy 2025, are expected to return to action in the series against England. While there was no news on Virat’s availability earlier, a Sharma’s availability for the series against AFG depended on if he will get a clearance from the BCCI’s CoE ahead of the tournament, which he has failed to do so thus far. Gaikwad to replace Kohli?
Gaikwad is expected to be picked as Virat’s replacement for the three-match IND vs AFG ODI series that commences from June 14. The report claims that Kohli has been advised rest for two weeks and that although he might be fit in time for the 3rd ODI, he is unlikely to be considered for selection. It is pertinent to point out that Ruturaj was added to the India A squad for the tri-series in Sri Lanka last week, replacing Riyan Parag. However, should Rutu be added to the ODI setup, then Rajat Patidar will be the one to replace him in the India A side, as per the report. Read more here.
