Ashwin has credited Gambhir for putting the team above individuals and has heaped praise on him following India's historic 3rd T20 World Cup win

Former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has lavished praise on head coach Gautam Gambhir for prioritizing the team over individuals over the last two years. The ex-Indian cricketer took over the reins of the team from Rahul Dravid in 2024, and has led India to the Champions Trophy in 2025 and the T20 World Cup in 2026. Ashwin has credited Gambhir for putting the team above individuals and has heaped praise on him following India’s historic 3rd T20 World Cup win.

More to Indian cricket than just a couple of people

Speaking to RevSportz, Ashwin noted that there was more to Indian cricket than just a couple of stars, highlighting that superstar culture was not what the Indian team was all about.

There is more to Indian cricket than just a couple of people. I like Gautam, and many people may have different opinions about him, but he is someone who always puts the team ahead of individuals. He credits the team, not individuals, and that’s something I admire. The best part about us was that none of us blamed each other. We all wanted India to win and make the country proud,” Ashwin said.

Gambhir record as coach

Gambhir has touched new heights in the white-ball formats. During his tenure — India has gone on to win 34 T20Is and lost only 6. In the ODIs, 11 wins and 12 losses is the record for now — which is bound to improve. Yes, series losses have come against Australia, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka, but he gives enough confidence to improve upon that.
