The International Cricket Council (ICC) has fined Indian fast bowler Arshdeep Singh 15% of his match fee for a Level 1 breach of the ICC code of conduct. During the T20 World Cup 2026 final between India and New Zealand, Arshdeep threw a ball at the stumps but hit Daryl Mitchell instead.
Arshdeep Singh hits Daryl Mitchell in anger
The Kiwi batter had hit Arshdeep for 2 sixes in the 11th over of the chase. Angered, after Mitchell edged the ball back to the fast bowler, he took a shy at the stumps. However, hit Mitchell’s pad instead. The tall batter was furious and walked towards Arshdeep, who went to his mark.
India captain Suryakumar Yadav stepped in to defuse the situation while on-field umpire Richard Illingworth reprimanded Arshdeep. After the over ended, the Indian quick apologised to Mitchell. After the match as well, Arshdeep ran towards the Kiwi batter for the flare-up. He even joked that the ball accidently reverse swung onto Mitchell’s pads.
The ICC responds
The ICC found Arshdeep guilty of breaching Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which prohibits throwing a ball at the player or near it in an inappropriate or dangerous manner. Apart from the fine, Arshdeep has been handed 1 demerit point as well, which is his first offence in the last 24 months.
“Arshdeep accepted the sanction proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, so there was no need for a formal hearing. On-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Alex Wharf, third umpire Allahuddien Paleker, and fourth umpire Adrian Holdstock levelled the charge,” the ICC said.
If Arshdeep is docked three more demerit points in the 24-month period, he could be served a one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is ban.
