MS Dhoni became the first-ever captain to win the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026.

MS Dhoni has arrived in Ahmedabad ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026 final between India and New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The former India captain was seen at the Mumbai semi-final earlier this week and is now in the city to watch the biggest match of the tournament from the stands.

Dhoni had attended India’s thrilling semi-final win over England at the Wankhede Stadium along with his wife Sakshi. Several celebrities including Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Anil Kapoor were also present in the crowd as India held their nerve to seal a narrow win and qualify for the final.

Now the legendary wicketkeeper-batter has travelled to Ahmedabad, where Suryakumar Yadav’s side will attempt to defend the T20 World Cup title against New Zealand.

Dhoni’s legacy in T20 World Cup history

Dhoni remains one of the most important figures in India’s T20 World Cup story. He captained the young Indian side that won the inaugural tournament in 2007 in South Africa. India defeated Pakistan in a dramatic final in Johannesburg to lift the first-ever T20 World Cup trophy. It was an emotional moment for Indian cricket, coming after a horrible ODI World Cup 2007.

Nearly two decades later, India are now chasing more history. If they defeat New Zealand in the final, they will become the first team to successfully defend the T20 World Cup title and also the first host nation to win the tournament.

Despite being 44, Dhoni has already begun preparing for the upcoming IPL 2026 season. The former captain has joined the Chennai Super Kings training camp as preparations begin for the new IPL campaign later this month.
