England’s turbulent winter has not been enough to force a change at the top. Despite a disastrous Ashes campaign and a T20 World Cup semifinal exit, Brendon McCullum is expected to continue as England’s head coach across all formats.
England’s latest setback came in Mumbai, where they fell seven runs short against India in the T20 World Cup semifinal. Jacob Bethell’s magnificent century kept England in the chase, but the effort ultimately went in vain. The defeat capped a difficult period for the team, which had already faced criticism after a poor Ashes tour of Australia earlier in the winter.
McCullum had come under scrutiny following the Ashes loss, with questions raised about his leadership and reports of off-field incidents adding to the pressure. However, the former New Zealand captain has made it clear that he wants to continue in the role, and indications suggest the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) are willing to back him.
Support from dressing room keeps McCullum in charge
England’s white-ball captain Harry Brook has openly supported McCullum, describing him as one of the most influential figures in the dressing room.
“I’ve said plenty of times he’s the best head coach I’ve ever had,” Brook said. “The way he speaks to everybody, he’s got an aura in the dressing room. Everybody looks up to him and the things he did in the game as a player was unbelievable and he’s just carried that into his coaching. The things he’s done over the four years since he took over has changed English cricket for hopefully the best. One hundred and 25 per cent he should stay.”
McCullum himself remains keen to continue guiding the side. Reflecting on his tenure, he said it has been a privilege to work with the team over the last three and a half years.
“It’s been an absolute privilege to be in this position over the past three and a half years. I feel like we’ve made some significant improvements across the various formats. Yes, we’ve missed some opportunities, but I think this team has a real opportunity over the coming years to continue to improve and hopefully finish what we started. I’d love to be a part of that.”
