If catches win matches, Team India isn’t winning T20 World Cup 2026. Suryakumar Yadav’s team has been the worst catching side in this year’s tournament, out of all the teams in the Super 8, and that too by some margin. On March 1, when West Indies scored 195, India dropped three.
Indian catching a big issue
Roston Chase was dropped by Abhishek Sharma in the fifth over, who went on to score 40 from 25 deliveries. Then Sherfane Rutherford was dropped by Tilak Varma, and lastly, Abhishek dropped Powell, who scored 34 from 19. This not only reflects badly on the team, but also can cost badly.
In fact, that has been the story of this tournament, where they have dropped 13 catches in all. That means, their catching efficiency has been down at 72.7%. Next on the list is Sri Lanka, who pocketed nearly 78% of their catches. To the utter surprise of all, Pakistan too fared much better, as compared to India — at 83.3%. The list is topped by England at 87.2%.
Worst catching efficiency
| Team | Catching Efficiency |
|---|---|
| England | 87.2% |
| Zimbabwe | 85.4% |
| West Indies | 84.6% |
| New Zealand | 83.9% |
| Pakistan | 83.3% |
| South Africa | 81.1% |
| Sri Lanka | 77.8% |
| India | 72.7% |
In the Pakistan match alone, Indian fielders dropped four catches, which is criminal. Even though the team won convincingly there, but that might not be the case, going forward in the tournament. If they end up making semis, they will be up against England in their last four contest.. their batters have found form late in the tournament, and can make IND pay.
