West Indies beat India by 7 wickets in 2009 T20 World Cup

In the 2009 edition of the tournament, which was played in England, the Caribbean side defeated India by a 7-wicket margin at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in the Super 8s. India, batting first, posted 153 at the loss of seven wickets in their allotted 20 overs. In reply, the Windies chased the target with ease in 19.4 overs, registering a 7-wicket win and denting India’s chances of progressing further in the competition.

West Indies beat India by 14 runs in 2010 T20 World Cup

Once again, the two teams met in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2010, hosted in the Caribbean. Batting first, the West Indies posted a competitive score of 169/9, courtesy of their middle-order lineup showcasing their prowess. In reply, India was seen struggling to maintain the momentum.

However, the top order managed to resist regular wickets and some tight bowling by the home side, restricting the inaugural champions to 155/9, resulting in them going down by 14 runs. The defeat did prove costly as it impacted their chances of progressing before the Super 8 stage.

This time, India met the West Indies in the group stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2014, hosted in Bangladesh. Playing in Mirpur, the West Indies took to the crease first and were seen struggling as they could post a below-par total of 129/7 in their allotted 20 overs. In reply, India chased the target comfortably, reaching 130/2 with five balls to spare, anchored by Virat Kohli’s composed knock.

The last outing prior to their upcoming clash in the T20 World Cup 2016 came in 2016. The two this time met in the semi-final of the 2016 T20 World Cup. Batting first, India posted a formidable 192/2, powered by a brilliant 89* from Virat Kohli. While the score looked competitive, the West Indies produced a sensational chase as Lendl Simmons (82*) and Andre Russell (43*) turned the game with their explosive hitting. This partnership helped the Windies seal victory with two balls to spare. Moreover, the win for the Windies helped them knock out India and eventually led the West Indies to claim their second T20 World Cup title.
