The India cricket team remains favourites to defend their T20 World Cup title. However, going into the Super 8 stage, the Men in Blue are one of the worst sides in one department: fielding. Suryakumar Yadav‘s team has dropped 9 catches, the second most among all teams in the event.
India’s catching woes
Ireland, who are out of the tournament, have dropped the most catches: 10. But India isn’t far behind. Although India has caught 20 catches, their efficiency is just 68.97%. In simple terms, for every 10 chances Indian bowlers create, the fielders are helping them take wickets 7 times.
Luckily, India is well aware of the issue. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate addressed the issue after the Men in Blue dropped 4 catches against the Netherlands yesterday. He reassured that the team is working hard for the Super 8. But they don’t want to worry too much about it.
“Dropping catches is never great. We’re working really hard at it. But you don’t want to make a big thing about it. You want to trust the players to do the work. But often in T20, that is the difference. Particularly in the Super 8 phase, and we talk about the next phase, we’re going to come up against some really good fielding teams,” Ryan said after the Netherlands match.
