Punjab cricket team unveiled their 18-member squad for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy which is set to begin from December 24 onwards. The side features the likes of India cricket team stars like Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma and Arshdeep Singh. Interestingly, the state’s selection committee hasn’t named a captain yet.
Gill to play VHT after T20 World Cup snub
Among those included in the squad is Indian ODI captain Gill, who was recently snubbed from the T20 World Cup squad. While the Punjab batter fared well in ODIs in 2025, amassing 490 runs from 11 matches at an average of 49, his performance in T20Is has been quite poor. After returning to the T20I side in the Asia Cup and following sub-par performances in that tournament followed by the series against Australia and South Africa, he was subsequently snubbed from the side for the T20 World Cup 2026.
Gill returned to action in the IND vs SA T20I series after suffering a neck injury during the 1st Test in Kolkata. following which he was forced to miss the ODI series as well. In the three T20Is that he featured in, he managed to register knocks of 4, 0 and 28. He was ruled out of the 4th T20I due to a foot injury and was replaced by Sanju Samson in the 5th T20I. Shubman is expected to take part in VHT 2025/25 in just a couple of games or a little more, following which he will lead the Indian team in the IND vs NZ ODI series that begins from January 11.
