Seasoned England all-rounder Chris Woakes has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, on Monday. The 36-year-old, who was most recently seen in the IND vs ENG series, played for the national side for almost 15 years, making his debut in a T20I against Australia in 2011.
Chris Woakes Calls it a Day
He suffered a career threatening injury during the fifth and final Test vs India a month back, and dislocated his shoulder, while fielding. Since then, his return to the English side looked nearly impossible. Nonetheless, he had a glorious career, where he went on to play 62 Tests, picking up 192 wickets and even scoring 2034 runs, with a ton and seven fifties.
Non-selection in Ashes Potential Reason
Apart from that he also appeared in 122 ODIs picking up 173 wickets, followed by 33 T20Is as well. The highlight of his career was, winning the 2019 World Cup at home, under Eoin Morgan. IN a longish statement on social media, he wrote, “The moment has come, and I’ve decided that the time is right for me to retire from international cricket.
“Playing for England was something I aspired to do since I was a kid dreaming in the back garden, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have lived out those dreams. Representing England, wearing the Three Lions and sharing the field with teammates over the last 15 years, many of whom have become lifelong friends, are things I’ll look back on with the greatest pride.”
Earlier, Robert Key, ECB’s MD had clarified that Chris Woakes did not fit in their plans at all. “..He was running out of time to be ready for the start for the Ashes. And then once you get out of an Ashes series, you’re often looking at the next cycle, really. So Chris Woakes isn’t in our plans at the minute… at all.”
