Former Pakistan cricket team captain Shahid Afridi has criticised the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for how they select the team. The comment comes after Pakistan, who were the hosts of the ICC Champions Trophy, crashed out of the tournament just 6 days after the event started and even failed to get a win to their names.
Shahid Afridi backs Mohsin Naqvi
Shahid, who was part of the PCB as the interim chief selector in 2022, has criticised the selection committee. He backed PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and lauded his work when it came to upgrading the three stadiums in Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi for the ICC Champions Trophy.
“I met the chairman sahab (Mohsin Naqvi) a few days ago in Lahore. The initiative about the grounds, the work done at the Gaddafi Stadium, is pretty good and pretty beautiful. He has worked, and he wants to work further,” Shahid said on Samaa TV.
“But he also says that he doesn’t know anything about cricket. When you don’t know cricket, then you should work with good, technical people who have some connection with the sport,” the Pakistani great added.
PCB selection committee to blame for Champions Trophy failure?
However, Shahid took aim at those working under the PCB Chairman. He claimed that the selection committee doesn’t know cricket, and that’s affected the performance of the Pakistan team.
“The faces we are seeing in the selection committee and directors, they don’t know cricket; they have all been bureaucrats. What is their relation with cricket? Why are they sitting on the selection committee? Why are they running the domestic cricket system?” he added.
“Everyone’s seeing the Pakistan team. You should strengthen the domestic cricket structure. If the guardian is good, the child will automatically be good,” Shahid concluded.
