Year Ender 2022 Indian Sports:  From India’s historic Thomas Cup Triumph to Neeraj Chopra’s Silver Lining at World Championships the year 2022 has been the year where the country had some of the best sporting moments in the history. Some of the top Indian stars have etched their names in history books by winning historic medals at world’s biggest sporting event. India’s top sporting moments

1) Neeraj Chopra Silver at world championship: Indian athletics has had an incredible year headlined by javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra. The Olympic Champion made history by winning the silver medal at World Championships. The 24-year-old Chopra, produced a best throw of 88.13m to clinch the second spot. The Haryana athlete also became just the second Indian to achieve the feat behind legendary long jumper Anju Bobby George.

2) Thomas Cup Triumph: The Indian badminton contingent ended the country’s 73-year-long wait to bring home the Thomas Cup. The Thomas Cup is considered the biggest team competition in badminton. The Indian team defeated powerhouses like Malaysia and Denmark all the way to the final. The badminton team defied all the odds to beat  Indonesia in the final in May this year.

3) India women win historic Gold in Lawn Bowls : The Commonwealth Games 2022 witnessed India making history Lawn Bowls sport by winning the country’s first-ever (gold) medal. The Indian quartet of Lovely Choubey (lead), Pinki (second), Nayanmoni Saikia (third) and Rupa Rani Tirkey (skip) etched their names in history books. The India team defeated South Africa 17-10 in the final of the Women’s Fours event.

 

4) PV Sindhu historic CWG gold: After 13 years of hard work and two failed attempts, PV Sindhu finally managed to pocket the CWG gold. The Indian shuttler went onto beat Canada’s Michele Li in the final to win the gold medal in Birmingham. Sindhu had earlier won bronze medal in Glasgow and silver medal at Gold Coast edition before the Birmingham triumph .

 

5) Mirabai Chanu’s silver medal at the World Weightlifting championship: After securing gold at Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Mirabai Chanu won a historic silver at the World Weightlifting Championships 2022. The event which was held in Bogota, Colombia saw Chanun secure her second world championships medal with 200 kg (87kg snatch + 113kg clean and jerk) effort.  She had won gold in the 2017 World Championships.

6) Satwik and Chirag win bronze at World Championships: Back in August, India’s men’s double pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty became the first Indian men’s pair to win a medal in the men’s doubles competition at the World Championships.  Satwiksairaj and Chirag defeated defending champions Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi  24-22, 15-21, 21-14 to claim the third spot Year Ender 2022, Neeraj Chopra world championship, Thomas Cup, CWG 2022, PV Sindhu, Mirabai Chanu, Nikhat Zarine, Lakshya Sen,Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty

7) Sharath Kamal’s 5 medals at CWG: The veteran paddler won more gold medals than 56 countries at CWG’22: The 40-year-old won three gold medals and a silver medal for India at the 2022 edition. Sharath won gold medals in the men’s team, mixed doubles and men’s singles events whereas he had to settle for in the men’s doubles category in Birmingham 2022.

8) Aman Sehrawat makes history at the U-23 World Wrestling Championships

Aman Sehrawat made history at the U-23 World Wrestling Championships by winning gold in the 57kg category. Sehrawat beat junior European silver-medallist Ahmet Duman of Turkey 12-4 to win the gold. Before Sehrawat, Bajrang Punia and Ravi Kumar Dahiya tried to win gold at the same event in their respective categories but ended up winning the silver medal.

9) Lakshya Sen’s incredible year: Indian badminton’s young sensation Lakshya Sen had an unforgettable year winning numerous big tournaments. Besides winning the maiden Super-500 title and two world tour titles, Sen won the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and the Bronze medal at World Championships. However all his effort was almost ruined by age fraud case against him. However the Karnataka High Court stayed further proceedings in an FIR filed against Lakshya Sen.

Nikhat Zarine has risen to be poster girl for India’s female boxers. The 26-year-old girl from Nizamabad won the gold medal at her maiden World Championship followed by CWG gold. Her recent success has affirmed her status as the new queen of Indian boxing.

11) Indian women’s hockey team clinch Bronze at CWG 2022: The Indian women’ hockey team  had to wait for 16 years before clinching the Bronze medal in Birmingham.  The women’s team defeated New Zealand 2-1 in a penalty shootout to take their place in the podium. Following the CWG success the Indian women’s hockey team won the FIH Women’s Nations Cup 2022.
