  • No.1 Iga Swiatek, the Tracy Austin Group winner, takes on No.7 Aryna Sabalenka for the fifth time this year.

The result was a mild surprise given the context of history; Sakkari’s loss became only the seventh time a player posted a 3-0 round-robin record and failed to reach the final. It last happened seven years ago, to Maria Sharapova and Garbiñe Muguruza.

It is a tournament that features the Top 8 highest ranked singles and doubles players and they have the biggest  price money on offer. This year the tournament is scheduled to be held from 31st October to 7th November 2022 at Fort Worth in Texas, USA:

  • Round Robin Group Matches  – 31st October to 5th November
  • Semifinals – 6th November
  • Finals – 7th November

Players to feature in WTA Finals 2022 

  • The eight players who would be battling it out in the biggest WTA tournament are World No.1 Iga Swiatek, who has won eight titles this year including two Grand Slam titles – Roland Garros and US Open.
  • World No.2 Ons Jabeur, who reached the Grand Slam finals at Wimbledon and US Open this year.
  • World No.3 Jessica Pegula, who won her first WTA 1000 title in Guadalajara last week.
  • Coco Gauff, who is the World No.4  and is the youngest to feature in the tournament since the last decade.
  • World No.5 Maria Sakkari, World No.6 Caroline Garcia, Aryna Sabalenka and Daria Kasatkina.

In doubles, the teams of Barbora Krejcikova/ Katerina Siniakova, Gabriela Dabrowski/ Giuliana Olmos, Lyudmyla Kichenok/ Jelena Ostapenko, Veronika Kudermetova/ Elise Mertens, Coco Gauff/Jessica Pegula, Yang Zhaoxuan / Xu Yifan, Desirae Krawczyk / Demi Schuurs and Anna Danilina / Beatriz Haddad Maia have secured their spots in the Fort Worth field.

WTA Finals Prize Money and Ranking Points 

A total prize pot of  $5,000,000 is set to be awarded to the participants in this year’s edition based on their performance. The 8 players will also be fighting for 1500 ranking points that is set to be awarded to undefeated champions.

  • 125 points for each match played during the round robin
  • 125 points for each match won during the round robin
  • +330 points in case of qualification for the final
  • +420 points in case of title

WTA Finals Groups 

Each of the eight singles players and doubles team are divided into two groups comprising four singles players or doubles teams each. Each singles or doubles team will face off against all the other participants in their respective groups during the group stage. At the end of the round-robin matches, the top two players from each group will advance to the semifinals.

Singles 

In the Singles, the eight players are divided into two groups that are named after former American legendary players Tracy Austin and Nancy Richey.

Tracy Austin Group

  • Caroline Garcia
  • Daria Kasatkina

Top seed Iga Swiatek leads the Tracy Austin Group and 18-year old Coco Gauff too fins herself in the same group. Both Swiatek, who is aged 21 and Gauff are the youngest players in the tournament and when they meet in the round robin stage, it will be a repeat of the French Open final this year.

Caroline Garcia, who won three titles this year including the Cincinnati WTA 1000 title also finds herself in the group. She defeated Coco Gauff in the quarterfinal of the Australian Open this year and the meeting between both the players yet again in the round robin format will be a blockbuster. Daria Kasatkina, who has won two titles this year fills the last spot in the group.

World No.2 Ons Jabeur leads the Nancy Richey Group. She will face a stiff challenge from Jessica Pegula. They last met at the Madrid Open final this year with Jabeur winning the match in three sets. Both the players will also face stiff challenge from Maria Sakkari and Aryna Sabalenka, both of whom are making their second straight appearance in the WTA Finals.
