“These medals are our life and soul. After we put it in River Ganga, there would be no meaning for us to live. So we will get to India Gate and sit on a fast unto death,” the wrestlers said in a statement.

Sakshi Malik, a bronze medallist at the 2016 Olympics, said in a statement on her Twitter handle that the wrestlers will go to Haridwar on Tuesday to immerse the medals into the holy river at 6 pm. Tuesday happens to be Ganga Dussera in Haridwar and possibly a day when a lot of people will be there to offer prayers.

A women’s “Mahapanchayat” was being held outside the newly inaugurated Parliament on Sunday as the wrestlers, who had been protesting at the Jantar Mantar, marched there. However, they were stopped by the Delhi Police en route.

Later, the police filed formal complaints against them and cleared the Jantar Mantar protest location. Unprecedented scenes of police dragging the Olympic and world championships medal-winning players were witnessed.

“We considered who to return the medals to. Should we give our medals to the President, who is a woman herself? She was barely two kms away from us but said nothing about our plight. Then we thought should we return them to the Prime Minister, who calls us his daughters? But no, not once has he asked us how we have been doing since we started protesting. In fact, the man we are protesting against, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh was invited to the inauguration of the news Parliament,” the statement said.
