  • This represents a 6% drop from 2021.
  • The decline is directly related to McGregor’s massive $180 million total last year, after he pocketed an estimated $150 million from the sale of his Irish whiskey brand, Proper No. Twelve. McGregor fell out of the top ten.

Lionel Messi Highest Paid Athlete: Messi earned $130 million, a figure which includes $55 million of endorsements.

The earning are calculated for the 12-month period ending May 1, 2022.

This year’s collective total is the third-highest ever, behind 2021’s $1.05 billion and the $1.06 billion total of 2018.

And in one clear sign that sports’ top stars are doing better than ever, the cutoff to make the top ten this year is $80.9 million, posted by the Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo. That’s an 8% jump from 2021’s $75 million—and a 24% increase from 2019’s $65.4 million, the previous high.

Los Angeles Lakers forward James was next on the list after bringing home a combined $121 million. He shattered the $96.5 million record for an NBA player that he set last year.

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo earned $115 million to sit third.


Brazilian football player Neymar ($95 million) and three-time NBA champion Stephen Curry ($92.8 million) of the Golden State Warriors rounded out the top five.


NBA player Kevin Durant ($92 million) was sixth while Swiss tennis great Roger Federer, who played five tournaments in 2021 before a knee operation curtailed his season, was third with total earnings of $90.7 million.


The final three spots on the list went to Mexican boxer Canelo Alvarez ($90 million), seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady ($83.9 million) and reigning NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Giannis Antetokounmpo ($80.9 million).

Forbes said its on-the-field earnings figures include all prize money, salaries and bonuses earned during the 12-month period while off-field earnings are an estimate of sponsorship deals, appearance fees and licensing income.
