World Badminton Championship Final: Viktor Axelsen beat Kunlavut Vitidsarn to clinch the men’s singles title at the BWF World Championships in Tokyo on Sunday. The Dane eased past his opponent in straight games 21-5 and 21-16. It was a much closer contest in the women’s final with Akane Yamaguchi defeating Chen Yu Fei to clinch the title 21-12, 10-21 and 21-14. Earlier, Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik won the men’s doubles title. In the women’s doubles final, it was the pair of Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan who emerged victorious. All eyes were on the Dane in the men’s singles. Axelsen has been one of the best player in the CWF circuit, and was determined to strengthen his position at the top with a crown in Tokyo.

Axelsen managed to do that without breaking much sweat. The first game was a smooth sailing with the Dane looking in top notch form to take it 21-5. Though Kunlavut impressed in the second game, it was never going to be enough against the class of Axelsen. The latter clinched it 21-16.
This is Axelsen’s second BWF World title. Axelsen, who won gold in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, won the world title in Glasgow in 2017.

When it came to the women singles, Yamaguchi justified her top billing in the final. She defeated the likes of Carolina Marin and An Se Young en route to the title-decider. In the game, which mattered most, the Japanese, after losing the second game, took it to the next level when it mattered most in the final game to be crowned champions.
The first final of the day was between Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik and Hendra Setiawan and Mohammad Ahsan. With both of the pairs being top class, it was expected to be a close affair in the title-decider.
In fact it was the sixth seed of Chia and Yik, who came up with a stunning display to win in straight games, score reading 21-19 and 21-14.
In the women’s doubles final, the top seeds from China, Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan were challenged in the opening game against Kom So Yeong and Kong He Yong. The top seeds won the first game 22-20, and came up with an even better show to win it 21-14.
