Women IPL 2023: The six-team Women’s IPL will be launched in March of 2023, before the IPL 2023. As BCCI earlier revealed, existing IPL franchises will be given preference to buy women’s IPL teams and an auction for WIPL teams will be held at the end of the year. The BCCI top brass will finalise the WIPL agenda at the AGM in September.
“March is where we believe it is practical to host. Not only it will help with the scheduling and getting an international window but also logistically. As IPL will begin end of March, it will help us streamline the logistics of women’s matches well,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.
BCCI President Sourav Ganguly also confirmed the development to ESPNCricinfo that the board has earmarked March window for WIPL.

To begin with, each team will play twice in the league stage while the BCCI is still in the planning stage of a home and away format. However, the IPL 2023 will return to its home and away format after a three-year absence.
“We have a clear idea of how it will go in terms of schedule but there are a few things we need to discuss,” the official said. When pressed on the number of matches, the official said they are expecting 19 matches to be played over a 15-day period.
InsideSport understands that the WIPL will follow IPL’s home and away formula with the playoffs. Top four at the end of league stage will play the playoffs with Eliminator, Qualifier and Qualifier 2 besides the grand finale. However, depending on IPL schedule, the number of days could be truncated to two weeks with a few double headers.

As for teams, the BCCI has already received interest from IPL franchises. But a final decision will be taken at the AGM next month. The franchises will be auctioned in an IPL style. However, there is no clarity on whether there will be a players’ auction for women or they will follow the draft policy.
“We have received interest not only from IPL teams but also from other business entities. But it has to be discussed and deliberated. We haven’t taken any decision on players’ auction. These are the few things that will be decided in the next few months,” the BCCI official said.
