Women Hockey World Cup: Savita Punia and co are set to open their Women Hockey World Cup campaign with the India vs England fixture in Amstelveen, Netherlands on Sunday. With the matches being held in Amstelveen, Punia is expecting the big Indian community to make their presence felt.
“There is a big Indian community in Netherlands and we are expecting many of them will turn up for the matches. We saw many of them come support us in Rotterdam during the Pro League matches and definitely fans support will motivate us even more,” Punia said.
However, it is going to be a tough clash against England, who are a strong side. The Indian team are raring to go after having some good training sessions under the watchful eyes of India coach Janneke Schopman.

If Punia has asked for support at the venue, Vandana has brought back the memories of Tokyo Olympics. Though miles away at Tokyo, the support was immense throughout India. And the Indian forward has asked for similar support for motivation this time around as well.
“When we were playing the Tokyo Olympics 2020, we were unaware of the kind of support we were getting from home in India where people were glued to their TV sets,” Vandana said.

“We got so much love and appreciation after we returned, and that meant a lot for us and it motivated us further to attain greater achievements. I hope the fans show us similar support and watch the matches live. We want to win a medal for the fans, for the country and end the wait for a medal in a prestigious global event.”
