He walked in to bat at No.3 following the dismissal of Ishan Kishan in the fifth over. Within a space of two balls, Rohit Sharma also walked back to the pavilion that left Mumbai Indians reeling at 52/2. Surya took on the responsibility and counter-attacked the RCB bowlers as he, along with Nehal Wadhera, brought the chase back on track.

Surya initially took time to settle as he scored only 18 runs off his first 14 deliveries. He accelerated slowly as his first six in the innings came against Wanindu Hasaranga in the in the 11th over. He slammed a four and a six back-to-back against Mohammad Siraj in the 14th over. With a double in the next ball, he got to his half-century 26 balls.

Surya shifted the gears and entered the beast mode soon. He slammed two sixes off Wanindu Hasaranga in the 15th over that brought the chase to less than run-a-ball. Surya was in no mood to slow down. He smoked a six off a waist-high full toss from Vyshak to fine-leg fence. A four off the subsequent free-hit followed and he yet again deposited the ball deep into the second tier as MI needed less than 10 runs to win the contest.

He however departed trying to hit another six and ended up giving a simple catch to Kedar Jadhav. However he ensured that the damage was done.

Sourav Ganguly was quick to laud Surya for his knock. The former Indian skipper called him the “best T20 player in the world”.

He was duly adjudged the player of the match for his match-winning knock. “The victory is much needed from team’s point of view. To win it like this is something special,” he said during the post match presentation.
