Even though it seems like Ashwin and Dinesh Karthik have played their final T20I matches, the BCCI will let Kohli and Rohit decide their future in the format.

“The BCCI never asks anyone to retire. It is an individual decision. But yes, with just a handful of T20Is scheduled in 2023, most of the seniors will concentrate on ODIs and Test matches in that cycle,” a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

“You don’t need to announce retirement if you don’t want to. You will not see most of the seniors playing T20 next year,” the source added.

But why would a captain who has led India to a World Record T20 winning-streak be sacrificed? Reason is his age. Rohit Sharma is already 35 and by 2024 WC, he will be 37. He has important task of leading both ODI and Test sides for at least two years. Hence, he will be frequently rested. As the T20s leading up to the 2024 WC would be important, India may look at split captaincy with fresh approach in T20s.

India are yet to lift an ICC trophy since their success in the 2013 Champions Trophy. Rohit Sharma was backed by the BCCI to end their barren run. But the Mumbai-born batter has failed to deliver the success promised.

Not just for India, the wait for the ultimate prize in the shortest format also continues for Virat Kohli, the Men in Blue’s greatest warrior in the history of this competition.

The age is also not on Kohli’s side. At 34, it is not clear if he will feature in the 2024 T20 WC, when he will be 35-36 years of age. Fans could only hope that Kohli will still be playing in a hectic schedule across all formats of the sport.

But the leading run scorer in T20 World Cup history (1,141 runs at an average of 81.50 with 14 half-centuries) will still be eager to get the well-deserved trophy to his name, maybe in 2024.
