The 38-year-old has been in the eye of criticism for his conduct following his comments on Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag. Messi winning the World Cup further swayed he debate, and Ronaldo’s deal to Saudi all but confirming his decline.

Ronaldo was a constant menace and earned a penalty when goalkeeper Keylor Navas collided with him. Ronaldo, who had a huge red bruise on his cheek as a result of the impact, lifted himself up to calmly convert the penalty kick and tie the game. Earlier, he levelled the game just before halftime, slamming home a rebound after Sergio Ramos missed a simple clearance.
