Andrey Rublev vs Frances Tiafoe
Frances Tiafoe has become the first American man in 16 years to enter the semifinal at the US Open as he defeated ninth seed Andrey Rublev in straight sets in the quarterfinal on Wednesday. He will now either face Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner in the semifinals on Friday. Tiafoe took control of his third tour-level meeting with Rublev by raising his game on a big ocassion.
The American was too good as the much higher ranked Rublev could not break the 24-year old as he did not carve out a single break point opportunity.
The American’s strategy of moving forward to pressure the ninth seed on the baseline was particularly effective, and he ended the match having won 76 per cent (31/41) of points at the net.
Carlos Alcaraz vs Jannik Sinner
After the early exits of Daniil Medvedev and Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz has a chance to become the World No.1. He needs to win just two more games to reach the top of the world rankings but faces a big test as he will be up against Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinal.
Both the players met earlier in the fourth round this year at the fourth round in Wimbledon and the Italian won the contest in four sets. Alcaraz now eyes a revenge in the year-end Grand Slam.
Alcaraz enters the contest after winning a five-set thriller against Marin Cilic, while Sinner defeated Ilya Ivashka in five sets in the fourth round.
Karoline Pliskova vs Aryna Sabalenka
In-form Aryna Sabalenka swatted aside Czech Karolina Pliskova 6-1 7-6(4) to reach her second straight U.S. Open semi-final on Wednesday.
The Belarusian underestimated her opponent in their two meetings last year, when Pliskova defeated her in the Wimbledon and Montreal semi-finals, but she was in dominant form in New York as she fired down seven aces and never dropped serve.
Iga Swiatek vs Jessica Pegula
World No.1 Iga Swiatek dropped a set for the first time in the tournament against Jule Niemeier in the previous contest but came back to win the contest and entered the quarterfinal. She takes on an in-form Jessica Pegula for a spot in the semifinals. Swiatek is aiming to win her second Grand Slam title of the year and end the season on a high.
Pegula meanwhile is the No.1 American woman and apart from dropping a set against Yue Yuan in the third round she has won all her remaining matches in straight sets. In the fourth round she defeated Petra Kvitova 6-3, 6-2 to enter her maiden US Open quarterfinal.
