Serena Williams vs Danka Kovinic
The most anticipated match of the tournament will be played between Serena Williams and Danka Kovinic. Serena will be playing her last tournament before retirement. Serena returned from injury lay-off nearly after a year at the Wimbledon in June this year and apart from a second round appearance at Canada Open, she faced first round defeats at WImbledon and Cicinnati Masters, she will look to end the year on a high. Danka Kovinic, the 27-year-old Montenegrin reached a career-high ranking of No.46 in 2016 and became the first woman from her country to win a WTA Tour title last year at Charleston. In January, Kovinic broke new ground for Montenegro at the Australian Open after defeating Emma Raducanu to become the first woman from her country to reach the third round of a Slam. It still remains her best performance this year. The upcoming contest might be Serena’s last match in her career and this remains one of the important matches to watch out for.
Emma Raducanu vs Alizeh Cornet
Defending Champion Emma Raducanu faces a tough first round contest against Alize Cornet. Cornet recently defeated World No.1 Iga Swiatek in straight sets in the third round of Wimbledon. Cornet will look to clinch another upset victory over the 11th seeded Raducanu. Raducanu meanwhile has had a injury plagued season and has not been in great touch. She enters US Open after a third round defeat at Cincinnati Masters.
Naomi Osaka vs Danielle Collins
Former US Open champion Naomi Osaka will face Danielle Collins in a blickbuster first round contest. Osaka has lost her touch and is struggling for form at the moment. The 24-year old suffered three first round defeats in her last four tournaments and is looking to resurrect her career. She faces USA’s Danielle Collins who finished as runner-up at Australian Open earlier this year. Collins however suffered injury setbacks this year and her recent form has not been that impressive as she faced first round defeats at Wimbledon and Lausanne Open. She will enter Wimbledon after more than a month away from the game. Both the players have met earlier this year at Miami Open with Osaka winning the contest.
Francisco Cerundolo vs Andy Murray
Andy Murray faces a tough challenge in the first round as he faces up and rising Franciso Cerundolo in the US Open opening round. Cerundolo has never gone past the first round of any Grand Slam tournament so far but the 24-year old has been in great touch this year. He won the Swedish Open title this year and has risen to 24th in the world rankings. Meanwhile Andy Murray started the year by winning the Sydney International title and later finished as runner-up at Stuttgart Open. He enters Wimbledon after a second round exit at the Cincinnati Masters.
Pablo Carreno Busta vs Dominic Thiem
12th seed Pablo Carreno Busta will face Dominic Thiem in the first round of the Wimbledon. Dominic Thiem is a former US Open champion but missed majority of the season with an injury. He enters the tournament after being granted a wildcard. Meanwhile Carreno Busta has been in a good form and he recently won the Canadian Open title after defeating Hubert Hurkacz in the final. He enters the contest as the favourite but Thiem has all the ability and experiecne on his side and he could take the game away from the Spaniard.
