Daniil Medvedev beat van de Zandschulp

No. 2 Daniil Medvedev moved into the semifinals, although not without surrendering his first loss of a set, by defeating the surprising qualifier Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands, 6-3, 6-0, 4-6, 7-5. The Russian is into the semifinals of the US Open for the third straight year.

Medvedev was content to play with van de Zandschulp in the early going, engaging in long rallies and, true to style, not trying to blow his less-experienced foe off the court. But the Russian crushed the qualifier just the same. The mild-mannered Dutchman did manage a break of serve at 2-5 in the first set. But Medvedev quickly extinguished that glimpse of hope and began to steamroll, bageling Botic in the second set.

In the third set, a visibly tired van de Zandschulp suddenly showed signs of life. Behind an excellent serving performance, the Dutchman started to wear away at Medvedev, who appeared to be lulled into committing unforced errors. Van de Zandschulp captured the set against the Russian by winning 91% of his first-serve points.

Van de Zandschulps’s strong effort continued in the fourth set, where he extended Medvedev to 5-all. Despite his tired legs, the stubborn Dutchman showed how he made such a storied run to the quarterfinals—and why he was such a tough out. Medvedev was tested in the end, but the Russian lost just three points on his serve in the final set.

Elina Svitolina vs Leylah Fernandez – Fernanzed wins, creates history

Leylah Fernandez continued her dream run at the US Open 2021 as she sealed a berth in the semi-finals just one day after her 19th birthday. The teenage sensation knocked out Elina Svitolina in three sets, eventually sealing the tie by keeping her cool in the tie-breaker to win 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (5). The Canadian becomes the youngest semi-finalist at Flushing Meadows since Maria Sharapova and is the youngest player to defeat two players ranked in the WTA’s top five since Serena Williams at the 1999 US Open.

Ranked No.73 in the WTA Rankings, Fernandez after the quarter-final said, “I honestly have no idea what I’m feeling right now. Throughout the whole match I was so nervous. I was trying to do what my coach told me to do. Thanks to the New York crowd, cheering me on, fighting for me and never giving up, I was able to push through today.”

“Svitolina, she’s a great player, she fought for everything, she runs for everything. I’m honoured to have a fight with her. I just told myself to trust my shots, trust that everything’s going to go well. Even if I lose, I’ve got to go for it, and I’m glad I did.”

World No.2 Aryna Sabalenka clinched a dominating straight-sets win over French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova to set up an exciting last-four clash against teenage sensation Leylah Fernandez. Sabalenka was at her mighty best, clinching the first set with some dominance and kept Krejcikova’s comeback efforts at bay to eventually win the match 6-1, 6-4. The Belarusian will be playing her first-ever US Open semi-final and will be aiming to clinch her maiden Grand Slam title at the Flushing Meadows.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Felix Auger-Aliassime – Canadian Felix Auguer through after Garfia pulled out in 2nd set due to injury

Felix Auger-Aliassime reached his first Grand Slam semi-final as he clinched a win over Carlos Alcaraz Garfia via a walkover on Wednesday. The 21-year-old Canadian had already built up a sizeable lead when Alcaraz called it off after struggling with injury. The win adds up to a brilliant 2021 for Aliassime, who had also reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon earlier this year. Aliassime is the first Candian to reach the US Open semi-finals in men’s singles and is the youngest after Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Porto to reach the final four at the Flushing Meadows. He will now face off against World No.2 and Australian Open finalist Daniil Medvedev for a place in the final.
