Galinichev won a silver medal in the under-56 kilogramme division at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires.

Before moving on to participate internationally in adult competitions, Galinichev also won gold at the EUBC European Youth Boxing Championships that year.

This statement was the first social media confirmation of Galinichev’s passing from the Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych. “On March 10, the silver medalist at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games Maksym Galinichev gave his life for an independent Ukraine. In the spring of 2022, Maksym refused to participate in the European Boxing Championships and volunteered for the stormtroopers. Glory to the hero.”

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February of last year, a number of Ukrainian athletes have lost their lives in combat, including Galinichev.

Due to the presence of boxers from Belarus and Russia, the Boxing Federation of Ukraine (FBU) declined to send competitors to the IBA Women’s World Championships held here. Due to the conflict in Ukraine, an international competition for Russian and Belarusian athletes has been mostly suspended. However, the International Olympic Committee is considering re-admitting them as neutrals.

The decision has angered Ukrainians, who have threatened to skip the 2024 Olympics in Paris if competitors from Russia and Belarus are allowed to compete.
