The victory was Stefanos Tsitsipas’ first on Grass since 2019. The top seed, who lost to Frances Tiafoe in his only match on the surface at Wimbledon last year, quickly found his range at the ATP 250 event, firing his forehand through the court in a rain-disrupted match to triumph against Stricker after 72 minutes.
His last win on grass prior to his victory over Stricker came against Frenchman Jeremy Chardy at the Cinch Championships in June 2019.
“I could work a little bit on the percentage of the first serve, which could be higher. Otherwise I was very involved with my footwork,” Tsitsipas said. “Being very active on the first ball on the serve, pushing my opponent back. It was a good match.”
Stricker, who defeated Maxime Cressy in the first round, was facing a Top 10 opponent for the first time in his career. Against an opponent like Tsitsipas, he couldn’t do much as the Greek won the first set 6-3 quite comfortably.
In the second set, Tsitsipas broke the 19-year old early to take 2-0 lead but the game had to be suspended due to rain. When the play resumed, both the players held on to their respective serves and the initial break was enough for Tsitsipas to seal the contest.
The Greek will now face Andy Murray in the quarterfinal on Friday.
