Tokyo Olympics: World No.1 Novak Djokovic lands in Tokyo ahead of Olympic games, eyes ‘Golden Slam’: World No.1 and 20-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic has arrived in Tokyo ahead of the Olympic Games. The 34-old had left Serbia on Thursday, he confirmed on Twitter saying he had booked his flight and was proud to represent Serbia at the Games in Tokyo. If the Serbian superstar can go on to win gold at US Open men’s singles, he would become the first male tennis player to compete for a Golden Slam.

Djokovic will look to add a gold medal to his name after his heroics in the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon. His previous best at an Olympics was bronze in Beijing in 2008.

This is the best opportunity for Novak Djokovic as the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem, and Nick Kyrgios, among other the top men’s players, have pulled out of Tokyo Games due to COVID-19 coupled with a busy tennis schedule after French Open nd Wimbledon.

“It came down to patriotism and my feelings for Serbia. I am not overjoyed about playing with no fans present or about the various coronavirus restrictions effective in Japan, but representing your country in the Olympics is indispensable,” Djokovic had said earlier this week, as quoted by Reuters.

“I came across Blanka Vlasic a few days ago and she said that people will only remember who won the medals, not what the conditions were like or whether there were any fans or not. Her words stuck with me and I am delighted that I decided to take part in the Olympics. I am inspired to play my best tennis and confident that I can win the gold medal after a tremendous run so far this season,” he added.

“The Olympics and the U.S. Open are obviously my biggest objectives for the remainder of the season, and it’s going to be demanding. But I am full of confidence and motivated to represent Serbia in the best possible way. I am yearning for a medal in Tokyo, hopefully gold, and then I’ll go to New York aiming to complete it all,” Djokovic signed off.
