Tokyo Olympics Archery- Deepika Kumari knocked out in quarterfinals: Deepika Kumari vs Korean San AN: Deepika Kumari has been beaten 6-0 by No. 1 seed Korean An San. In a match that did not last long, An San won in straight sets, 6-0. This came after the World No. 1 archer Deepika Kumari defeated the silver medalist of the team event in the Rio Olympics- Ksenia Perova. However, Atanu Das created a huge upset on Thursday as he defeated multiple Olympic medallists from Korea. Deepika was put under pressure in the 1st set after An San shot a perfect 30 from 3 arrows. Deepika was off to an uneasy start shooting just a 7 with her first arrow. She lost the 1st set 30-27, 2nd set 26-24, and 3rd set 26-24. An San qualifies for the semi-finals and Deepika Kumar has been knocked out in the quarterfinals.
Star Indian archer Deepika Kumari bowed out of the ongoing Tokyo Olympics after losing to South Korea’s An San in the women’s individual quarter-finals here at Yumenoshima Park on Friday.
Top seed San defeated world number one Deepika in an absolutely dominating fashion 6-0 to march into the semi-finals of the individual event.
20-year-old San is aiming for her third gold medal at Tokyo after finishing top of the podium in the mixed team event and the women’s recurve team event. Korean An San had a brilliant start to the first round as she aimed at three 10s while Deepika shot 7-10-10. San carried that momentum in the second round and clinically shot 9-10-7 to which Indian responded with 10-7-7.
The dominance of the South Korean continued in the third set as she gathered 26 as opposed to 24 of Deepika. Match ended in less than six minutes. With this San will either face USA’s Mackenzie Brown or Mexico’s Alejandra Valencia in the last four.
Earlier in the day, Deepika defeated Russian Olympic Committee’s (ROC) Ksenia Perova to progress into the quarter-finals (6-5) in the 1/8 Eliminations round in the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics

Star Indian archer Deepika Kumari defeated Russian Olympic Committee’s (ROC) Ksenia Perova in the women’s individual event to progress into the quarter-finals here at Yumenoshima Park on Friday.
World number one defeated Ksenia by 6-5 in the 1/8 Eliminations round in the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Both archers had a good start in the match with a 9, but the Indian’s second arrow was a perfect one. Perova who was then under pressure, landed a 7 resulting in Deepika gathering the two points by 28-25.
Ksenia Perova hit back in an absolute fashion as she clinched the next set. Deepika pegged one back in third and took the lead.
Fourth went tied with both archers shooting 26. With her back against the wall, the Russian responded well in the decider and took the match to the shoot-off.
Ksenia started the shoot-off with a poor 7 which Indian responded with a perfect 10 as she wrapped up the match. With this win, Deepika will either face San An of South Korea or Japan’s Ren Hayakawa in the quarterfinals.
Earlier on Thursday, Deepika’s husband Atanu shocked South Korea’s Jinhyek Oh in a nail-biting finish to make it to the 1/8 Elimination round in the men’s individual archery. Deepika defeated USA’s Jennifer Mucino-Fernandez 6-4 in the 1/16 eliminations round on Wednesday to set up the match with Perova.

Deepika had no trouble when she took on Bhutan’s Karma, registering a convincing 6-0 win to progress through to the round of 32. Despite the win, her scores of 26, 26 and 27 points were not convincing enough. That slow start came back to haunt her in her clash against Fernandez, who took an early lead by scoring 26, as Deepika managed only 25. However, the Indian ace bounced back with successive 10s to take the second set 28-25.

Deepika continued her momentum and took the third set with a 27-25 score, hitting yet another 10. She could not seal in the win in the next set as a poor score of 6 allowed the 18-year-old American to crawl back, and level the scores 4-4 with a 25-24 win. Luckily for the Indian, Fernandez couldn’t force a tie-break, and managed nine in her final arrow, handing Deepika a 6-4 win.
Individual event rules
As per essentiallysports.com, the athletes will compete in 5 sets in which each player will get 3 arrows per round. For each set winner gets 2 points, and in case of a tie 1-1 point for each player. The first archer to earn 6 points wins.
