‘My tennis is similar’, Australian Open winner Jannik Sinner draws parallel to No 1 Novak Djokovic

Jannik Sinner beat Daniil Medvedev in the Australian Open 2024 final to clich his first Grand Slam

Jannik Sinner has reflected on the influence of tennis legends Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic on his game. With 20, 22, and 24 singles titles, respectively, they stand as the most successful male players in tennis history, their achievements transcending the sport itself.

While Federer retired two years ago and Nadal is currently sidelined due to injury, Djokovic continues to dominate. However, Djokovic recently suffered his first Australian Open loss in 34 matches spanning six years, falling to Sinner, who went on to clinch his first Major title by defeating Daniil Medvedev.

Sinner compared his playing style to Djokovic’s, noting their proficiency from the baseline and their similar movement on court. He expressed gratitude for encountering these tennis greats and learning from them during their time on tour.

“I think my tennis is similar to Djokovic’s. We both played well from the back of the court, but we tried to go to the net. The way we slide on the track is also similar. I feel lucky to have met them.”

“Roger is no longer here, but when the three of them were there, I tried to watch what they did in the gym, outside of it. … Learn as much as possible from them. I feel lucky that they are on the tour because they have won more ‘Grand Slam’ titles than anyone else.”

Jannik Sinner claimed stellar victory over Novak Djokovic

Sinner’s victory over Djokovic at the Australian Open marked his third win over the Serbian legend in just over two months. Despite Djokovic’s formidable reputation, Sinner displayed exceptional performance, notably not allowing Djokovic a single breakpoint opportunity. Subsequently, Sinner went on to secure his first Grand Slam title by defeating Medvedev in the final.
