Mumbai Open Tennis: Indian women claim upset wins over WR-92 & WR-93

Mumbai Open: WR-520 Shrivalli Bhamidipaty ousted 93rd ranked Nao Hibino on Tuesday, while WR-336 Sahaja Yamalapalli removed 92nd ranked Kayla Day.

Indian women’s tennis players seem to be on a roll at the ongoing Mumbai Open as World No. 520 Shrivalli Bhamidipaty, stunned the second seed of the tournament, Japan’s Nao Hibino 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (5), on Tuesday.

A day prior to that, wild card entrant Sahaja Yamalapalli had defeated the top seed of the tournament, Kayla Day of the USA crashing out of the tournament. The upcoming singles star, Bhamidipaty claimed her first win over a top-100 player in the world, with Hibino ranked 93th in the world currently.

Now, in the second round, she will be up against 16-year-old Alina Korneeva. On the other hand, Asian Games gold medallist Rutuja Bhosale defeated Thailand’s Peangtarn Plipuech 6-4, 7-5 to become India’s third participant in the second round.

Ankita Raina Loses

But India’s top-ranked player Ankita Raina lost to USA’s eighth-seed Katie Volynets. As far as the doubles is concerned, Prarthana Thombare and her Dutch partner Arianne Hartono made it to the quarters with win over Thailand’s of Luksika Kumkhum and Peangtarn Plipuech 6-4, 2-6, 10-6.
