Jannik Sinner joins Djokovic & Alcaraz as new ‘Big 3’ after title run in Rotterdam

Jannik Sinner joins Djokovic & Alcaraz as new ‘Big 3’ after title run in Rotterdam

Prior to Sinner becoming world number 3, Adriano Panatta was the highest-ranked Italian man in history.

Jannik Sinner has entered the ATP Top 3 for the first time. After his title run in Rotterdam, the reigning Australian Open 2024 champion has displaced Daniil Medvedev to become the highest-ranked Italian man in history. Currently on a 15-match win streak, Sinner is enjoying the best period of his short career.

Prior to Sinner clinching the world number three ranking, Italian legend Adriano Panatta was the highest-ranked Italian tennis player in history. After joining Panatta as Italy’s second Grand Slam winner, he’s now beaten his 48-year record and joined Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic as the new ATP Top 3.

Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz & Novak Djokovic: The New Big 3?

With Jannik Sinner winning the Australian Open, the last seven Grand Slams have been won by the trio. Djokovic, who was the original and last entrant of the ‘Big 3’, is now the oldest member of this new three-way.

Some can say that it’s a bit premature to include Sinner and Alcaraz in ‘Big 3’, but it isn’t a comparison with Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal. Right now, for every tournament that happens, primarily the ATP Masters and Grand Slams, the current ATP Top 3 are the top title contenders.

One can question Sinner’s inclusion as well, but since the French Open last year, he’s been a better player than Carlos Alcaraz. He made the Wimbledon semifinals (lost to Djokovic), won the China, Vienna, and Canada Open, and lost in the ATP Finals to Djokovic. This year, he is on a 15-match win streak and is less than 600 points away from overtaking Alcaraz in the rankings.
