“When you are six months in the bubble, there are lots of players in this team who are all-format players. In the last 24 months, they have been home for 25 days. I do not care who you are, if you’re name is Bradman and you are in a bubble, your average will come down because you are human. It is not something you put petrol in the backside and expect the guy to move on,” said Shastri during a virtual post-match press conference.
“It does not happen that way. These are tough times, in life, it is not what you accomplish, it is what you overcome and this is what this team has shown. They have shown the drive to hang in there. No complaints but sooner or later the bubble will burst, so you have to be careful,” he added.
He added that the only thing missing in India’s cabinet in his tenure is the ICC tournament. He wished luck to India to win the elusive title in upcoming years. He further stated that India had 10 missing parts when he took the job but it has been reduced to 1 or 2. Someone else can fill that in future.
Shastri also thanked BCCI and mentioned that communication within the dressing room has been free and players vocal about their issues.
“Communication has been free we have managed players especially with their training methods. One thing we were never short of communication. Everyone had the freedom to express and I think it has been one heck of a journey,” said Shastri.
Among major achievements, he spoke about India’s winning records across formats over the last 5 years. “No Asian team defeated Australia in 70 years, we beat them twice,” he stressed.
“We won back-to-back (Test) series in Australia. We took the lead in England and it could be the longest lead-in history (with the final Test being deferred to next year). I might be commentating on that Test,” Shastri mentioned.

Shedding light on split captaincy, he said it’s not such a bad thing owing to the amount of cricket and bubble. The players need to be rotated to spend time with the family. He said that in Rohit Sharma India has got a capable guy with so many IPL trophies. He is ready in the wings to take the Indian cricket team forward.
The Men in Blue failed to progress to the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup after losing to Pakistan and New Zealand. Talking about the T20 World Cup campaign, Shastri said: “Let’s be honest, I am not here to make excuses. We lacked daring in the second game against New Zealand.
Ravi Shastri also revealed that former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president N Srinivasan was the reason behind him getting into a coaching stint with the side.
“One man I would like to give the special mention, his name is N Srinivasan. He was the man who insisted that I do this job in 2014. In fact, I didn’t have the belief that I could do this job, he had more belief in me than I had and I hope I haven’t let him down. Sir you listening, I got the opportunity and I did my work without any agenda,” he stated.
Rahul Dravid will take over from Shastri and the former India skipper’s first assignment would be the home T20I and Test series against New Zealand, beginning November 17.
