T20 World Cup semifinals – ENG vs NZ: In a big blow to England’s World Cup aspirations, in-form opener Jason Roy has been ruled out of the T20 World Cup with a calf injury. The news comes just 48 hours before England’s semifinal match against New Zealand on Wednesday. James Vince has been named as Roy’s replacement.

Roy sustained a calf injury in England’s defeat to South Africa in their final Super 12s match in Sharjah. James Vince will replace Roy in England’s squad for the rest of the tournament.

Roy ruled out of T20 World Cup

“I’m gutted to be ruled out of the World Cup. It is a bitter pill to swallow. I will be staying on to support the boys, and hopefully, we can go all the way and lift that trophy. It has been an unbelievable journey so far, and we have to continue expressing ourselves and concentrating on us,” Jason Roy said.

“The rehab has already started, and even though I’ve torn my calf, I’m going to give myself the best chance of being ready for the T20 tour of the Caribbean at the start of next year,” he added.

Roy is the second player from England’s squad to have been ruled out of the tournament. Leat-arm pacer Tymal Mills was already ruled out with a hamstring injury which he sustained during the Super 12 clash against Sri Lanka.

Replacement for both the players have been named but the question that remains intact is that will they be able to fill in the void? Mills had looked in a good touch having claimed seven wickets from four games while Jason Roy had scored 123 runs, only behind Jos Butler, with the highest score of 61.

With Jason Roy ruled out, England will be forced to field a new opening pair in the form of Jos Butler and Jonny Bairstow. Also, Sam Billings is highly likely to fit in the middle order.
