Sushil Kumar Murder Case: Disgraced Indian Olympian Sushil Kumar has been charged with murder of junior national champion Sagar Dhankar. A Delhi court on Wednesday framed charges against Olympic medallist wrestler Sushil Kumar and 17 others in the Chhatrasal Stadium murder case, setting the stage for their trial. Additional Sessions Judge Shivaji Anand framed charges against Kumar and other accused under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code, including those related to murder, rioting and criminal conspiracy.
A detailed order is awaited. Kumar along with others is accused of allegedly assaulting former junior national wrestling champion Sagar Dhankar and his friends in the parking lot of the city’s Chhatrasal stadium on May 4, 2021 over an alleged property dispute.
According to the police, Dhankar used to earlier live in the flat in Model Town which is owned by Kumar. The two wrestlers had an ongoing dispute over the rent of the flat which snowballed into a fatal brawl after the 23-year-old abused Kumar.
Dhankar later succumbed to injuries and, according to the post-mortem report, he died due to cerebral damage resulting from a blunt object impact. The Delhi Police had arrested the wrestler on May 23. The sportsman has been lodged in judicial custody since June 2, 2021.
Sushil Kumar has been charged under various sections of the Indian penal code (IPC), including murder, attempt to murder, rioting, unlawful assembly, and criminal conspiracy. The 37-year-old was on the run for three weeks, before being nabbed by the police.
Sushil Kumar had approached a court in Delhi’s Rohini seeking protection from arrest in May last year but his dismissed his plea citing he was the prime conspirator. Delhi Police earlier opposed Sushil Kumar’s bail petition in Delhi High Court, saying witnesses were ‘terrified’ of the wrestler and his associates that one of them had moved the court seeking protection.
