Sudirman Cup 2023 Highlights, India vs Australia: India ended their campaign in the Sudirman Cup 2023 on a winning note. They defeated 4-1 against Australia in their final group encounter in the Sudirman Cup 2023 on Wednesday, 17th May 2023. India started the day with a loss against Sai Pratheek and Tanisha Crasto in Mixed Doubles. However HS Prannoy, Anupama Upadhyaya, Men’s Doubles pair MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila and Women’s Doubles duo Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto clinched victories in their respective matches. Sai Pratheek/Tanisha Crasto vs Choo Kenneth/Gronya Somerville

The Indian pair played their second game in the tournament. They led at the start and entered the interval in the first game with the score at 11-9. After the interval, the Australian pair tried to make a comeback. They fought well and reduced the deficit to just a solitary point. However from 18-17, the Indian duo took three points on the trot and won the first game 21-17.

In the second game, Choo/Somerville duo started with a 6-2 lead. They went on to stay ahead in the game and comfortably won it 21-14 and took the contest to the decider. In the decider, the Indian pair began with a lead. However Choo and Somerville managed to fightback and levelled the scores 7-7. Wide shot from Pratheek gave the Australian pair the decisive lead and they capitalised on it and went on to enter the interval with a two-point advantage.

From then on, it was a one-way contest. The Australians didn’t let their lead slip away and went on to win the contest 21-18.

HS Prannoy vs Jack Yu

HS Prannoy sailed past Jack Yu in just 27 minutes to seal his first win in the tournament. Having earlier faced defeat against Chou Tien Chen, the newly ranked World No.7 entered the contest as the overwhelming favourite.

He started straightaway with a 6-1 lead and entered the interval with a massive seven-point advantage. In the second game his dominance continued as he made life difficult for the Australian with his attacking shots. With a smash, he took his lead to 18-8 and with successive points he won the first game comfortably.

In the second game, too his domination continued. He entered the interval with a 11-6 lead. After the break, he took seven points on the trot to take an unassailable 18-6 lead. He soon closed out the contest in his favour, helping India level the scores.

Anupama Upadhyaya replaced PV Sindhu in the women’s singles. The youngster, who is ranked 90th in the world faced 99th ranked Tiffany Ho. Upadhyaya did not disappoint as she clinched a dominating 21-16 21-18 win that gave India the lead in the contest.

MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila then defeated Ricky Tang and Ryane Wang 21-11 21-12 in the men’s doubles to hand India an unassailable 3-1 lead in the contest. The women’s doubles pair of Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa finished off the contest in style, beating Kaitlyn Ea and Angela Yu 21-19 21-13 to hand India a consolation win.
